Good news continues to pour in for Milan. Following the arrival of Niclas Füllkrug this evening, the club has finally managed to terminate its contract with Divock Origi, after months of negotiations for what has been considered one of the club’s worst signings in history.
Multiple sources, including La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia, have confirmed that an agreement has been reached and the official paperwork for the mutual termination of the contract has been signed.
The contract was supposed to run until June 2026, and the player remained completely sidelined for a year and a half, but he refused to end his lucrative contract prematurely. His last appearance for Milan was in May 2023.
Origi joined Milan as a free agent from Liverpool in July 2022, but the experience proved to be one of the worst transfers in the club’s history. He made 27 appearances and scored only two goals (against Monza and Sassuolo) before being loaned to Nottingham Forest for the 2023-24 season. Despite returning to the club in July 2024, he never played again. He was sidelined and sent to train with the youth team, Milan Futuro, in a desperate attempt to force him out. This plan failed, however, as the 30-year-old seemed content to continue receiving his salary without ever setting foot on the pitch.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the contract was worth €300,000 per month, or approximately €4 million net per season. It is alleged that Origi didn’t even bother training with the youth team, instead traveling between Rome and Florence to work with a personal trainer to maintain his fitness away from the club’s facilities.
