Xabi Alonso is not safe from dismissal, according to the newspaper AS, which also indicated that winning the last three matches will not be enough to save the coach’s position at Real Madrid in the new year.
The Real Madrid management had threatened Alonso with dismissal if he lost any of the previous matches against Alavés, Talavera, and Sevilla. The coach managed to win all three after a series of disappointing results in the preceding weeks.
However, there is a sense of unease within Real Madrid regarding the lackluster performance of Los Blancos, particularly against Sevilla, raising serious questions about Alonso’s suitability to remain in his position and whether he can make a difference.
Alonso has offered little improvement or found a new solution in the last three matches, and the board believes the team’s victories were solely due to the individual skills of Kylian Mbappé and his teammates. This has fueled discussions at the Santiago Bernabéu offices that entering the Spanish Super Cup with the Basque coach will virtually eliminate Real Madrid’s chances of winning the title.
Florentino Pérez has not yet made a final decision, but it is highly likely that Alonso will be dismissed before the team returns to training on December 29th. Álvaro Arbeloa remains the frontrunner to succeed the former Bayer Leverkusen coach at Real Madrid.
It’s worth noting that The Athletic reported that Alonso and his staff believe the recent victories have bought them much-needed time. The coach attributed the poor performances to injuries and fatigue, rather than his tactical ideas and playing style.
