Carlos Queiroz Returns to Egypt

Alaa Nabil will leave his position as technical director of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) after Hani Abu Rida and his board decided not to renew his contract, which expires at the end of 2025.

The EFA announced this decision in an official statement, which included the following: “The EFA affirms its full appreciation for the great efforts made by Alaa Nabil during his tenure, valuing his dedication and contributions as one of the EFA’s loyal members and a highly regarded technical expert.”

Reports from Egyptian media indicate that Carlos Queiroz, the former coach of the Egyptian national team, is the frontrunner to succeed Alaa Nabil as technical director of the EFA.

Queiroz will be responsible for planning Egyptian football and appointing coaches across all national team categories. It is rumored that the Portuguese coach will bring in three coaches of his own nationality to lead the Olympic team and two youth teams.

The presence of Queiroz in his position will put significant pressure on the national team coach, Hossam Hassan. Should the Pharaohs fail to achieve anything positive in the Africa Cup of Nations, Hassan could be dismissed, and the Portuguese coach could be temporarily appointed to lead Egypt in the 2026 World Cup.

Queiroz previously coached Egypt for approximately a year and a half, during which he led them to the Africa Cup of Nations final, losing to Senegal, and also missed out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup, also against Senegal.

Since leaving Egypt, the 70-year-old has had modest stints, coaching Iran in the 2022 World Cup, and then managing the Qatari and Omani national teams, without any notable success.
