Marca reports that Girona has its sights set on signing Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir during the upcoming winter transfer window.
Shobeir, considered one of the most promising goalkeepers in Egypt recently, was a target for Valencia about a year ago, but Al Ahly refused to sell him at the time.
According to recent reports, Girona sees Shobeir as their second choice in January to bolster their goalkeeping options, behind Diego Conde, to replace Croatian goalkeeper Livakovic, who is expected to leave as soon as the winter transfer window opens.
Levakovic refused to play in Girona’s Copa del Rey Round of 32 match against Ourense, with substitute goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga taking his place while he was suffering from a fever. This contributed to the Catalan club’s 2-1 defeat and early elimination from the competition.
Girona coach Michel strongly criticized Livakovic for refusing to play in the match and for pushing for a transfer, saying, “He wants to play for another team because if he plays for Girona, he won’t be able to play for any other team.”
Shobeir will be participating with the Egyptian national team in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which kicks off on December 21 and runs until the end of January 2026.
Shobeir’s move to Girona is not expected to be smooth if the Spanish club decides to sign him. Al Ahly’s management will most likely hold onto him, considering him the future of their goalkeeping position, or they will demand a hefty sum to agree to his sale, which would be beyond Girona’s financial means.
