Mourinho secures his first Champions League win with Benfica

Portuguese coach José Mourinho secured his first Champions League victory with his new club Benfica, after Samuel Dahl’s early goal paved the way for a 2-0 win over Ajax.

Before this match, both teams were at the bottom of their Champions League group with zero points, having lost all four of their opening games.

Left-back Dahl scored with an unstoppable volley after the ball rebounded off Ajax goalkeeper Vetëslav Jaros, who had parried a header from Benfica’s veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi. Leandro Bareiro added a second goal in the 90th minute.

This victory takes Benfica to 29 points, their third of the season, keeping their hopes of reaching the play-off round alive, while Ajax remain pointless at the bottom of the group.

This is Mourinho’s first Champions League win since his last victory with Tottenham in the 2020 group stage.
