Wayne Rooney has called on manager Arne Slot to bench star player Mohamed Salah in an attempt to get Liverpool back on track.
After a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the reigning champions now sit 11th in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.
Salah failed to score or assist in the loss, which marked Liverpool’s sixth defeat in their last seven Premier League matches.
“I understand Salah is a Liverpool legend and I know what he’s done for this club,” Rooney told Slot, “but if you were a new Liverpool player and you were on the bench, and then you saw him not running back and starting every game, what message would you take?”
He added, “If I were Arne Slot, I would try to make a big decision just to have an impact on the rest of the team.”
“Salah should be on the bench, and then, when you start winning games, you can bring him back, and hopefully he’ll drop back more defensively,” he added.
The 32-year-old Salah has made 17 appearances for Liverpool this season, scoring just 5 goals and providing 3 assists.
