French Football Federation President Denies Zidane’s Appointment as Deschamps’ Successor

Philippe Diallo, president of the French Football Federation, emphasized that there is no agreement between his organization and Zinedine Zidane to take over as coach of the French national team after the 2026 World Cup, succeeding Didier Deschamps.

Deschamps will leave his post after 14 years, during which he led Les Bleus to victory in the 2018 World Cup. Since announcing his decision last year, Zidane’s name has been immediately linked to succeeding him, especially given the Real Madrid legend’s repeated assertions that his biggest dream in coaching is to manage his national team.

In recent days, rumors have intensified, even suggesting an agreement between the two parties. When contacted by the newspaper L’Équipe, Diallo categorically denied these rumors, confirming that there are no negotiations between the French Federation and any coach at this time.

Diallo explained, “This isn’t just wishful thinking; it’s simply respect for the current team. Didier has been with his coaching staff for 14 years, and I don’t want to add anything that might hinder the French national team’s preparations.”

He added, “I have a lot of admiration and respect for Zinedine Zidane, both for what he’s given to French football and for his achievements as a coach, winning titles. But we need to focus. Right now, we’re preparing for the World Cup.”

When asked about the timing of the announcement of France’s new coach, Diallo suggested two possibilities: either after the 2026 World Cup or well before the final stages of the tournament.

He concluded, “Anything is possible. There’s no reason why there can’t be harmony between Deschamps and his successor. Didier announced his departure clearly and in a distinctive way, so there’s no problem with that harmony. One option is the end of the first quarter of 2026.”
