Former Chelsea star Oscar on the verge of retirement due to heart problems

São Paulo announced that Brazilian midfielder and former Chelsea star Oscar is in stable condition in hospital after suffering a heart problem.

The 34-year-old’s condition worsened while he was undergoing pre-season fitness tests at São Paulo’s training center on Tuesday.

Oscar had returned to his boyhood club, São Paulo, where he began his professional career, in December 2014.

The club stated: “Oscar experienced a cardiac event with changes in his heart function. He received immediate attention from club specialists and the medical team from Albert Einstein Hospital.”

The statement continued: “The player was then taken to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and under observation for further tests to determine the diagnosis.”

Brazilian newspaper Globo reported that Oscar was using an exercise bike when he suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness for two minutes.

The newspaper added that Oscar is now considering retiring from football. He returned to São Paulo, managed by former Chelsea and Argentina striker Hernán Crespo, on a three-year contract until 2027, after spending eight years playing in China.
