Viktor Gyokeres used the Arsenal-Atletico Madrid match to showcase his attacking prowess and respond to the harsh criticism he has received in recent weeks.
The Swedish international scored twice against the Rojiblancos at the Emirates Stadium in the third round of the Champions League.
Atletico Madrid held firm until the 56th minute, when Gabriel gave Mikel Arteta’s side the lead. Gabriel Martinelli then doubled the lead in the 64th minute.
As Diego Simeone’s side began to attempt a comeback, Gyokeres stepped in, scoring twice in the 67th and 70th minutes, drawing cheers from the Emirates Stadium crowd.
Viktor Gyökeres’s brace against Jan Oblak was more than he had scored in seven Premier League games for Arsenal, where he had only scored once, and doubts were growing about his ability to perform to the tune of the €70 million paid for him last summer.
