Barcelona announced in an official statement the renewal of star player Frenkie de Jong’s contract, following lengthy negotiations between the two parties that spanned more than two years until an agreement was reached to keep the Dutchman at Camp Nou until the summer of 2029.
De Jong has suffered much criticism in recent years due to his frequent injuries, and his salary has also been a heavy burden on the Catalan club’s coffers, given his reported annual salary of more than €20 million.
The Dutch international’s contract with Barça was set to expire at the end of this season, but the player wanted to continue with Hansi Flick’s squad after his impressive performances in the last year and his strong understanding with his teammates. He also changed his agent to facilitate negotiations with the club, ultimately signing a new contract with the Blaugrana.

Details of De Jong’s new contract with Barcelona
According to Sport, De Jong has significantly reduced his salary, earning between €9 and €10 million per year after taxes, and has signed a four-year contract until the summer of 2029.
Meanwhile, De Jong’s new contract includes a €500 million release clause, protecting Barcelona from any potential foreign offers, especially since he has recently been on the radar of major Premier League clubs.
De Jong’s renewal process has been described as one of the most complex in Barcelona’s history, spanning more than three years and involving two agents for the same player. It is considered one of Joan Laporta’s most successful contributions and will undoubtedly solve part of Barça’s major financial crisis.

De Jong: Winning the Champions League with Barcelona is my goal
De Jong spoke to the media on Wednesday after signing the contracts, saying, “I’ve always wanted to be at Barcelona. I’m in a good moment now, and I feel comfortable within the club, in the city, with my teammates, and with the management. I want to stay here for many more years.”
He added, “My new salary? I won’t tell you! (Laughs) There’s been a lot of talk, but I think—and I’ve said this more than once—that what was said about my salary was very exaggerated, and the numbers that were published were never true.”
He continued, “I didn’t win the Champions League with Barcelona, which is a big goal for the club and a big goal for me as well. We want to win every possible title: more La Liga, more cups, and more Super Cups. I promise the fans that we will try to achieve that.”

De Jong’s numbers with Barcelona
De Jong joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 from Ajax in a massive deal valued at €86 million.
Since then, the 28-year-old has made 267 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals and providing 24 assists.
The Dutchman’s talents exploded last season after recovering from a major injury that sidelined him for months. This season, he has made eight appearances for Hansi Flick’s side, providing one assist.
In terms of trophies, De Jong has won two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and two Spanish Super Cups. His best performance in the Champions League was reaching the semi-finals last year.
