Barcelona announced through its president, Joan Laporta, that the Spotify Camp Nou stadium is now ready to host the Catalan club’s matches in La Liga and the Champions League.
Laporta held a press conference at the stadium on Tuesday to reveal the latest updates and the extent to which work has been completed, clearly confirming that the stadium now meets all specifications.
Meanwhile, Elena Fort, Laporta’s deputy, confirmed that the entire matter now depends on the Barcelona City Council’s final decision on whether to grant the stadium a permit.
Fort continued, “Barcelona’s desire is for the City Council to issue the initial occupancy certificate today, so that we can play next Sunday (against Real Sociedad).”
The Barcelona City Council is expected to announce its final position on the Real Sociedad match within hours. The Paris Saint-Germain match will be played at Montjuïc Stadium, even if the permit for Camp Nou is issued beforehand.
Laporta also confirmed that he is in contact with UEFA to secure an exception that would allow Barcelona to play the remaining league matches (after Paris Saint-Germain) at Camp Nou, in light of UEFA regulations that stipulate that a team must play on one ground throughout the first half of the season.
