Former Barcelona star Samuel Umtiti will bid farewell to the world of football, deciding to retire after a illustrious career marred by numerous devastating injuries.
According to Sport, Umtiti visited his former club, Lyon, to record a personal video, during which he is said to announce his decision to retire from football.
Umtiti, 31, has been without a club since his contract with Lyon expired last June, and had previously scheduled September 10th to make a final decision on his future.
Umtiti was one of France’s most prominent defenders of the last decade and was a key factor in his country’s 2018 World Cup triumph. However, the subsequent knee surgery effectively ended his career.
Umtiti tried several times to regain his form, but things proved more difficult than he expected, and he left Barcelona for Lecce. His last experience with Lille was extremely poor, as he only made 13 appearances last season.
Although he is still relatively young for football, and has received offers from France, Italy, and even from outside Europe, Umtiti believes his knee will not improve, and that the time has come to say goodbye to playing and focus on other projects.
