Former Real Madrid star Lucas Vázquez has finally settled on his new destination, effectively completing his move to his next club on a free transfer.
Vázquez’s contract with Real Madrid expired at the end of the 2025 Club World Cup, and the club decided not to renew it due to his advanced age and a noticeable decline in performance last season.
The 33-year-old Vázquez has recently received numerous offers from Spain, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, but the Spanish international will ultimately remain in the top five leagues.
According to German media reports, Vázquez has finalized his agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to join Erik ten Hag’s squad on a long-term, two-year contract.
Vázquez could potentially replace Jeremie Frimpong at the BayArena, after the Dutch international moved to Liverpool earlier this summer for €40 million.
Spanish media reported that Vázquez had categorically refused to join any other Spanish club, lest he ever face Real Madrid, despite Espanyol, in particular, making him a very attractive offer.
Vázquez still has a chance of facing his former club, but only in the Champions League and only once, if Real Madrid are drawn against Leverkusen.
