CAS Announces Final Decision on Crystal Palace’s Europa League Participation

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld UEFA’s decision to bar Crystal Palace from the Europa League for breaching the multiple ownership rule.

UEFA had relegated Crystal Palace to the Europa League, instead of the Europa League, due to the club’s joint ownership with Lyon through businessman John Textor, despite his recent sale of his stake in the English club in hopes of salvaging the situation.

Because the clubs involved failed to meet the deadline to prove that no one person had influence or control over more than one club, the clubs’ domestic league standings were used, granting Lyon—which finished higher in Ligue 1 than Palace in the Premier League—a Europa League spot.

According to the Mirror, Palace’s appeal to CAS against the UEFA decision was rejected after three judges reviewed it in recent days. This brings the case to a complete close, confirming Oliver Glasner’s squad’s participation in the Europa Conference League.

Thanks to this decision, Nottingham Forest secured a place in the Europa League alongside England’s Aston Villa, given that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished seventh last season and were supposed to participate in the Conference League after Palace won the FA Cup.
