The Crisis Between Barcelona and Ter Stegen Ends

The curtain has fallen on the major crisis between Barcelona and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, following a series of positive initiatives from both sides on Friday.

Ter Stegen had been placed under investigation for refusing to sign a medical report stating he would be out for more than four months. The club considered this an act of stubbornness on the part of the German goalkeeper, preventing the team from registering another player in his place.

Despite reports that Ter Stegen had decided not to communicate with Barcelona’s management again and was adamant about his position, he ultimately decided to reconcile and issued an emotional statement affirming that his first loyalty remains to Barça and nothing else.

Ter Stegen wrote in the statement, “A lot has been said about me in recent weeks, some of which was completely unfounded. I consider it necessary to reveal my version of events in a respectful but clear manner.”

He continued: “The decision to undergo surgery was made after consulting with medical specialists and with the full approval of the club, and in line with my prioritizing my health and long-term sporting career, which is certainly fully aligned with Barcelona’s, to be available on the pitch as soon as possible to continue winning titles.”

He added: “I would also like to clarify – in light of some speculation – that all of the club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery. Therefore, my unfortunate circumstances with the new surgery I had to undergo could not be considered necessary to sign other teammates whom I greatly respect and look forward to sharing the dressing room with for many seasons.”

He concluded: “I am fully prepared to cooperate with the club’s management to resolve this matter and submit the required report. Much may change, but one thing will never change: I love you, Colliers.”

A few hours after this truce, Barcelona announced in an official statement that Ter Stegen had reversed his previous position and signed the medical report, allowing Juan Garcia to be registered in his place until he fully recovers from his injury in January.

In response to Ter Stegen’s positive gesture, Barcelona also confirmed the end of any disciplinary proceedings against the 33-year-old and his reinstatement as team captain after the decision to temporarily strip him of the captaincy and award it to Ronald Araujo.
