Former Real Madrid star Luka Modric revealed the reasons behind his move to Milan after his contract with the club expired, despite receiving substantial financial offers from Saudi Arabia and the United States.
The Croatian international will only receive €2 million during the year he will spend with Milan, while he could have earned more than double that amount if he joined the Saudi League or the American League.
In an interview with Milan TV, Modric responded, “I wanted to stay in Europe. I received other offers, but when Milan called, I didn’t think twice. This was my desire from the beginning, and I was very pleased that the Croatian sporting director came to present the club’s project to me.”
He added, “It showed me how much Milan wanted to sign me, and that is very important. I am now at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and we cannot be satisfied with mediocrity. I am here to win titles and compete with the best teams in the world.”
He concluded, “Since childhood, I’ve been a big fan of Serie A, and Milan is my favorite team there. I’m happy to be here and I’m looking forward to starting this adventure.”
The 39-year-old is scheduled to join the Milan camp in mid-August after his vacation, meaning he’ll likely miss the Rossoneri’s first Serie A match against newly promoted Cremonese.
