Barcelona has officially announced a two-year contract renewal for goalkeeper Szczesny.
Szczesny joined Barça last October after Ter Stegen suffered a cruciate ligament injury. In January, he succeeded in replacing Iñaki Peña as the starting goalkeeper, remaining the Catalan club’s first-choice goalkeeper until the end of the season.
In recognition of the 34-year-old’s efforts and his belief in his ability to make a difference, Barcelona’s management decided to keep Szczesny for two seasons, a new blow to Ter Stegen.
With this move, Barcelona confirms its previous plan to have Joan Garcia as the starting goalkeeper and Szczesny as his replacement, while ter Stegen and Peña are both terminated.
Peña has already received several offers, and Barcelona hopes to finalize this deal before the start of pre-season on July 13.
On the other hand, Ter Stegen remains committed to continuing with Barcelona, and with Szczesny’s contract renewal, his situation is becoming increasingly complicated, and the club’s attempts to oust him will not cease.
It is reported that the German goalkeeper will hold a frank conversation with coach Hansi Flick at the start of the pre-season, hoping to convince him of his ability to compete with Garcia and Szczesny, or reach a settlement that would see him leave.
