A new chapter in the rivalry between Bayern Munich and Barcelona is now off the pitch, specifically in the summer transfer market.
The Bavarian club is looking to bolster the left winger position this summer, and its first choice is Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, who has an agreement with Barcelona.
According to Sky Sports, Bayern Munich’s management has not given up and is trying again to persuade Williams to abandon his agreement with Barcelona and choose the Allianz Arena.
Bayern has offered the Basque player €10 million in salary, which is more than his salary if he moved to Barcelona, which would range between €7 and €8 million.
At the same time, Bayern is playing on the idea that they can activate the player’s release clause and sign him immediately, while Barcelona is still struggling to resolve matters with Athletic Bilbao.
Williams’ release clause with Bilbao is €62 million. Barcelona’s management contacted Bilbao to discuss the payment in installments, but the response was definitive: the only way to sign the player would be to pay the full amount in one installment.
So far, 22-year-old Nico Williams wants Barcelona and nothing else. However, if a transfer crisis arises or the release clause is activated, with Bayern Munich holding out for him and the salary gap, things could change. This is the only bet for sporting director Max Eberl.
