Real Madrid announced in an official statement on Sunday evening the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new coach, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid agreed with Alonso about three weeks ago to succeed Ancelotti. The Spanish coach then agreed with Bayer Leverkusen to part ways early, even though his contract at the BayArena still extended until the summer of 2026.
Two days ago, Real Madrid announced the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, who will take over as coach of the Brazilian national team starting May 26.
According to Real Madrid’s statement on Sunday, Alonso will begin his duties as Real Madrid coach on June 1, with his first competition in his new position being the Club World Cup in the United States.
The 42-year-old Alonso signed a contract that will keep him as Real Madrid coach until June 2028 and will be presented to fans at a press conference on Monday.
It’s worth noting that Alonso began his coaching career with Real Sociedad’s reserve team before taking over at Leverkusen in 2023, leading the team to a domestic treble and a place in the Europa League final.
