Zubimendi rejects Real Madrid and joins Arsenal

Arsenal has completed its first summer signing, signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal that will cost the London club around €60 million, the value of the player’s release clause with the Basque club.

Zubemendi had attracted interest from many clubs, with Liverpool the most eager to sign him last summer after his impressive performances with the Spanish national team at Euro 2024. He then surprised everyone by deciding to stay with Sociedad for another year.

In recent months, as Real Madrid was searching for a midfielder who could replace Toni Kroos, Zubimendi’s name was mentioned and he was said to be the first choice within the club’s offices. This increased with Xabi Alonso’s approach to coaching Los Blancos.

Ultimately, Zubimendi reached a final agreement with Arsenal to sign him next season on a five-year contract.

Although it may seem surprising at first, given that a move to Real Madrid was a possibility, the reality is that Arsenal have been in negotiations with the 26-year-old since last November, offering him the most logical project based on his abilities while guaranteeing him regular first-team football.

Zubemendi is one of the world’s most accomplished midfielders and is seen as a match for Manchester City star and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, making him a winning signing for Mikel Arteta’s squad.
