It appears the curtain will fall on the battle to sign one of the most important stars of the current generation, Florian Wirtz, after he made a final decision regarding his future and his new destination after Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz’s contract with Leverkusen runs until the summer of 2027, but he is expected to leave next summer or at the latest after the 2026 World Cup, amid interest from some of Europe’s elite clubs.
Spanish newspapers have previously revealed that Real Madrid sees Wirtz as a successor to Luka Modric, and Pep Guardiola is a big fan of his and wants to sign him at Manchester City.
Wirtz Refuses to Join Real Madrid
According to a new report from Bild, Florian Wirtz has informed Xabi Alonso that he does not want to move to Real Madrid.
Alonso will take over as Real Madrid coach next season, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti, and he was keen to bring Wirtz with him from Bayer Leverkusen, especially since the two men’s relationship, both personally and on the pitch, is at its best.
However, surprisingly, the 21-year-old player was frank with Ancelotti that a move to Real Madrid was not of much interest to him at the moment.
According to Bild, Wirtz told Alonso that he doesn’t even want to join Manchester City, and that his only desire is to move to Bayern Munich.
Bayern Munich willing to buy Wirtz
Wirtz’s desire to join Bayern Munich may be a result of the intense pressure exerted by Bavarian club officials in the German media to emphasize their strong desire to acquire the player.
Bayern’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, confirmed that his club was willing to pay more than €100 million to sign Wirtz, considering that bringing him and Jamal Musiala together on the same team is the most important dream for the Bavarian management at the moment.
At the same time, Wirtz’s signing is not expected to cost just €100 million. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes previously stated that his club would not part with its star player for less than €150 million.
