Hossam Hassan has addressed speculation over his future as Egypt head coach, with reports of an imminent departure gathering pace just days before the Pharaohs assemble for their November training camp ahead of two 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Malawi.
The reports come amid debate over media coverage of Hassan’s family disputes and ahead of a double-header he will have to watch from outside the technical area. FIFA suspended him following Egypt’s World Cup exit.
“I don’t know who’s spreading this story about me leaving the Egypt job,” Hassan said, stressing that he was still carrying out his duties and that his coaching staff had already begun preparing for the upcoming camp.
Asked about his family disputes being brought into the discussion over his future, Hassan said, “What do these disputes have to do with my job, what it involves or how committed I’ve always been to it?” He added that he should be judged on the team’s performances and results, as well as on how he works with his players.
Hassan said Egypt’s team director had met with Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida to discuss the next steps. Team director Ibrahim Hassan confirmed that the squad would assemble at the National Teams Centre on 9 November to prepare for both matches.
Egypt host Malawi at Cairo International Stadium on 13 November before travelling to face them at Bingu National Stadium on 17 November. The Pharaohs go into the double-header top of the group with four points, ahead of Angola on goal difference.
Hossam and his brother Ibrahim will both serve touchline bans for the two games. The staff are continuing their preparations amid reports that the results against Malawi will factor into the federation’s assessment of the coaching team’s future.
