According to the BBC, Villa’s hierarchy considered the apology sufficient to settle the dispute, following several days of public exchanges that escalated into a threat of legal action.

The row began when Carragher suggested Unai Emery as a potential Manchester United manager should Michael Carrick leave. He argued that the Spaniard might welcome another opportunity to lead one of Europe’s biggest clubs after his previous spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

The suggestion angered Villa supporters, prompting Carragher to respond with combative remarks on Stick to Football. He discussed differences in clubs’ stature and cited Cristiano Ronaldo’s move from United to Real Madrid to illustrate his point.

Villa responded with a statement signed by Sawiris, announcing their intention to take legal action over what they described as unacceptable insults. It added: “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stand in the way of our rise in English and European football.”

As the dispute escalated, Carragher wrote on X: “I would like to apologise to Aston Villa, their owners and supporters. My language this week was ill-judged and wrong.” He explained that his comments had been intended as a joke, while acknowledging that they had not come across that way.

The BBC reported that Villa had not actually begun legal proceedings. Their latest decision therefore concerns withdrawing the threat of action, rather than dropping a case already filed in court.

Villa’s progress helps explain the club hierarchy’s sensitivity to the remarks. Since arriving in 2022, Emery has taken the team from a battle to avoid relegation to regular Champions League participation, as well as winning the Europa League in 2026.
