Manchester City suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat after falling 1-0 to visiting Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium in Matchday 9, prolonging their slide following a flawless start to the campaign.
Enzo Maresca’s side had opened the season with seven straight victories to top the table with a maximum points tally, before succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa last weekend and failing to steady the ship against one of the season’s standout packages.
Yasin Ayari scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute, while the hosts’ subsequent efforts to equalize proved futile, allowing Brighton to walk away from the Etihad with a precious victory and denying City any points for the second game running.
Manchester City remains frozen on 21 points, provisionally retaining top spot on goal difference ahead of Arsenal, who hold a game in hand and the opportunity to claim sole possession of first place when they face Liverpool on Sunday, after City dropped six points across two matchdays.
Meanwhile, Brighton raised their tally to 19 points in third place—just two points off the summit—after securing their sixth win alongside one draw and two losses, confirming their stature as the Premier League’s dark horses this season under Fabian Hürzeler.
City is not the first heavyweight to fall to Brighton this season; the Seagulls previously swept aside reigning champions Arsenal with a 3-0 victory on September 19, inflicting Mikel Arteta’s side with their only league defeat to date.
The victory also carried a measure of revenge, coming just three days after Brighton were knocked out of the League Cup by City at the very same venue, where a 2-2 draw concluded with the hosts advancing 4-3 on penalties.
City now face two away fixtures prior to the international break: visiting RB Leipzig on Wednesday, November 4, in the Champions League, followed by a trip to face Nottingham Forest on Saturday, November 7, in the Premier League, as they look to rediscover winning ways before players depart for international duty.
