Manchester United is leaning toward giving Michael Carrick an additional opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around, despite mounting pressure on the English manager following recent dismal results and rampant speculation surrounding his potential dismissal.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that current expectations point to Carrick remaining in his post, with training sessions proceeding as normal and the board expecting a strong reaction from the squad in their upcoming fixture.
According to the same source, the manager is set to lead the Red Devils against Chelsea on Saturday, October 31, at Stamford Bridge—a crucial test aimed at halting the side’s slide and restoring balance.
This decision follows a grueling week during which United suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat away to Como in the UEFA Champions League, before tumbling to a 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
The latest setback brought the team’s loss tally to six in their opening 12 matches across all competitions, alongside just two victories, placing Carrick’s future under intense review by the club’s hierarchy.
Speaking after the Bournemouth defeat, the manager admitted: “It is a difficult situation, there’s no hiding from that,” adding: “We have to wait and see what happens,” while emphasizing his sense of responsibility and expressing gratitude for the supporters’ continued backing.
Carrick had returned to take charge of United in January 2026, guiding the side to a third-place finish and securing Champions League qualification, which earned him a permanent contract through 2028, announced last May.
It is worth noting that English media reports had indicated a division within the United board over Carrick’s potential successor, with some favoring Eddie Howe and others leaning toward Julian Nagelsmann, before the decision was made to temporarily extend a vote of confidence to the English manager.
