Bayern Munich has confirmed that its manager, Vincent Kompany, will miss leading the team for weeks following the health scare that required his hospitalization, leaving the Bavarian club to face the upcoming period under the guidance of the coaching staff.
Sporting Director Max Eberl revealed this development during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Freiburg match, clarifying the club’s stance on the Belgian coach’s return while doctors continue to investigate the causes of his incident.
Regarding the duration of the absence, Eberl said: “We are not talking about days, but about weeks,” affirming that Kompany will receive all the time he needs to recover without setting a specific date for the resumption of his duties.
Adding on his health condition, he stated: “First of all, the good news is that he is in a stable condition. It was a difficult moment for us all; he collapsed on the pitch, and he is now in the hospital, where he will remain for a few more days until the doctors figure out exactly what happened and run all tests thoroughly.”
He continued: “He experienced some minor issues last week as well. The tests are ongoing and have yielded some results, but additional examinations are needed to accurately determine what he is suffering from, and only then can the appropriate treatment be determined.”
He added: “I am not a doctor, so I won’t draw conclusions or make assumptions. He is in the best possible hands, and that is what matters most. What we can do now is support him mentally, give him positive energy, and show our love during this difficult phase.”
Eberl emphasized the priority of recovery, saying: “Football is not the most important thing in life; health is. We must give him the peace and time he needs, and he should only return when he feels fully recovered. Our biggest task will be to protect him, to some extent, even from himself.”
Kompany had collapsed on Friday while watching the reserve team’s training session, after recently suffering a viral infection that kept him away from some preparations for the Arsenal match before returning to the bench in the encounter that ended 2-2, with no medical confirmation of a link between the infection and the collapse.
The coaching staff, led by Aaron Danks, will take charge of training and managing matches during Kompany’s absence, starting with the Freiburg match on Sunday, while the coach remains under medical supervision, separating his hospital stay of a few days from his weeks-long absence from the team.
