Lamine Yamal equaled Kylian Mbappé’s record as the top goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League before turning 20, despite Barcelona’s defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
The Spanish winger scored his team’s second goal during the clash at the Parc des Princes, giving Barcelona a temporary equalizer in the closing stages before Paris secured the victory to end the Catalan side’s winning streak.
Yamal raised his tally to 13 goals in the Champions League, matching Mbappé’s record in the tournament during his teenage years, making the duo joint-holders of the top spot. The Barcelona star now needs just one more goal to claim the record outright.
Yamal has ample opportunity to increase his tally in the coming months, having turned 19 on July 13 and not reaching his 20th birthday until July 2027, giving him the remainder of the current season to enhance this milestone.
His individual achievements were not limited to equaling Mbappé; his goal against Paris brought his season tally to ten goals for Barcelona across all competitions, alongside ten assists, raising his direct goal contributions to 20.
He thus became the first player across Europe’s top five leagues to reach ten goals and ten assists for his club this season, having previously hit the ten-assist mark during the victory over Real Betis, when he scored a goal and provided an assist.
Yamal now prepares to face Mbappé once again, but this time on the pitch, when Barcelona host Real Madrid in El Clásico this coming Sunday, looking to translate his individual brilliance into a victory that makes up for the disappointment in Paris.
