The club announced details of the Argentina international’s condition after he was rushed to the hospital straight from the match venue, while the goalkeeper posted a reassuring message from his hospital bed, revealing his initial timeline for a return.

Chelsea stated in an official release: “Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has undergone successful surgery to treat a jaw fracture.” Examinations carried out upon his arrival at the hospital confirmed that the injury required immediate surgical intervention.

Martínez was injured during the second half of Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton, when his head collided with home defender Jarrad Branthwaite while contesting a cross. He received medical treatment on the pitch for over eight minutes before being stretchered off with his neck in a brace.

Writing on his Instagram account, the goalkeeper said: “Thank you for all the messages, the surgery went well,” adding: “We will be back in a few weeks.”

Mike Penders replaced Martínez and helped the team see out the remainder of the match without conceding. Prior to his exit, the Argentine made four saves, bringing his total saves in the league this season to 25 across six appearances, during which he has conceded 11 goals.

Martínez joined Chelsea on August 30, 2026, from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, for a reported fee of 7.5 million pounds. He made his debut on the very same day against Brighton.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper arrived in London after making 256 appearances for Aston Villa across six seasons, bringing vast international experience that includes winning the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América titles. His absence hands Penders a fresh opportunity, while Chelsea await his recovery to regain one of their standout summer signings.
