Real Madrid have welcomed back Brazilian defender Eder Militão after José Mourinho included him in the squad to face Sevilla, bringing an end to an absence of nearly six months due to injury.
The club officially announced Militão’s inclusion in the matchday squad for Sunday evening’s ninth-round La Liga fixture at the Santiago Bernabéu, marking the defender’s first call-up under Mourinho.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Portuguese manager said: “Tomorrow, Militão will be in the squad,” before Real Madrid officially confirmed his return to the group.
Militão had been sidelined since last April when he suffered a tear in the proximal tendon of his hamstring, an injury that required surgery and the start of a lengthy rehabilitation program.
His initial recovery period was estimated at around five months, before he took part in a portion of group training on September 28—153 days post-surgery—subsequently ramping up his workload gradually over the past two weeks.
His return to the squad does not mean he is ready to play a full match, as the coaching staff intend to handle him with caution and reintegrate him with gradual minutes to avoid any setbacks following his long layoff.
Militão’s return comes at a crucial time as Real Madrid prepare to face RB Leipzig in the Champions League on October 21, followed by El Clásico against Barcelona four days later, while Vinícius remains sidelined domestically due to suspension.
Ferland Mendy still requires more time despite participating in group training, while Rodrygo and Raúl Asencio continue their respective rehabilitation programs, handing Mourinho a fresh option alongside Huijsen, Konaté, and Rüdiger in central defense.
