Spanish outlet AS revealed that manager José Bordalás personally contacted Carvajal to outline the role he would play within the side—a move that significantly boosted the veteran right-back’s enthusiasm for the Getafe project.

The 34-year-old prefers to remain close to home and avoid major disruptions to his family life, while also holding great respect for Bordalás’s personality and his team’s combative style. However, Cadena SER stressed that negotiations have not yet reached a final agreement.

According to the Spanish radio network, Carvajal offered himself to Getafe as a free agent, with the club having an open spot in their squad and some financial flexibility. However, La Liga approval and finding a salary structure that fits within the club’s spending limit remain the primary hurdles to completing the deal.

Getafe also need to thoroughly evaluate the player’s physical condition, particularly following the serious knee injury he suffered in 2024 and the subsequent muscular issues that impacted his playing time. Bordalás is primarily looking to reinforce the wide attacking and midfield areas, meaning the signing will undergo comprehensive discussion with his coaching staff.

Carvajal has been without a club since his contract with Real Madrid expired on June 30. Despite receiving several inquiries, he preferred to wait for a project that fit his personal and professional circumstances. Getafe could offer him regular playing time without forcing him to leave the environment he has lived in for the vast majority of his career.

Carvajal departed Real Madrid after 450 appearances, 14 goals, and 27 trophies, including 6 UEFA Champions League titles and 4 La Liga crowns. He stands as one of only five players to win the European Cup six times, having also scored in the 2024 final against Borussia Dortmund.
