Robert Lewandowski delivered a masterclass performance to lead Poland to a resounding 6–0 victory over Romania, netting a memorable hat-trick that further cemented his legendary status in national team history.
The veteran striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 24th minute, doubled his tally just two minutes after the restart, and completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute at the National Stadium in Warsaw.
Poland’s remaining goals were scored via a Virgil Ghiță own goal alongside strikes from Piotr Zieliński and Jan Bednarek, capping off a dominant performance that reignited head coach Jan Urban’s campaign in the UEFA Nations League following a slow start.
This marked the seventh international hat-trick of Lewandowski’s career and his first for Poland since October 2019 against Latvia. He had previously claimed hat-tricks against Georgia, Denmark, Romania, Armenia, and Latvia, in addition to his famous four-goal haul against Gibraltar.
The 38-year-old forward increased his international tally to 92 goals in 170 appearances, extending his commanding lead at the top of Poland’s all-time scoring charts ahead of Włodzimierz Lubański in second place with 48 goals. Lewandowski also holds the all-time appearance record for his country.
His international journey began in September 2008 when he came off the bench to score against San Marino in a World Cup qualifier. Captain of the national team since 2013, he has represented Poland across two FIFA World Cups and four UEFA European Championships.
Lewandowski’s three goals during the current international window all arrived in the match against Romania, following goalless outings in a 0–0 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 3–1 defeat to Sweden.
The victory moves Poland to 4 points in third place in League B, Group 4, behind leaders Sweden (7 points) and second-placed Bosnia and Herzegovina (5 points), while Romania remain bottom without a point. Poland travel to face Bosnia on Monday, October 5, where a victory could elevate them into second place.
