Algeria have made their position clear regarding the possibility of stepping in to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) should CAF decide to strip hosting rights from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania due to construction and infrastructure delays.
The 36th edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place between June 19 and July 17, 2027. However, recent inspection reports highlighted slow progress in stadium construction and renovation across the three co-hosting nations with less than nine months remaining before kickoff.
An official source within the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) confirmed to winwin that the country has no interest in hosting the tournament and will not alter its stance even if a direct request is issued by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
While French media reports listed Algeria, Egypt, South Africa, Ivory Coast, and Morocco as ready contingency options, Morocco prefers to focus resources on the 2030 FIFA World Cup, whereas Algeria prioritizes domestic football development.
Algeria previously withdrew its bids for the 2025 and 2027 editions back in September 2023. The same source added that the federation subsequently turned down a proposal from CAF to bid for upcoming editions despite possessing state-of-the-art stadiums and modern infrastructure.
In the meantime, CAF continues to proceed officially with the East African trio as co-hosts. The governing body concluded an eight-day inspection tour in early September, followed by a meeting between CAF President Patrice Motsepe and Kenyan President William Ruto to review preparation timelines.
