Lamine Yamal has insisted that he sees no reason to alter his style of play to satisfy critics or chase individual statistics, emphasizing that joy and game-changing moments matter far more to him than financial gain, goals, or assist counts.
Speaking following a trophy-laden stretch that includes winning Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup with Spain alongside three La Liga titles with Barcelona, the 19-year-old winger framed the Ballon d’Or as a natural byproduct of sustained team success.
Yamal believes scrutiny surrounding his performances has intensified due to heightened expectations, noting that supporters treat elite outings as routine while magnifying any match where he falls below his usual high standards.
“I don’t play football for money; I play because I love it. Players obsessed solely with goals or assists do not enjoy the game,” the Spanish international told The Guardian.
“I play for enjoyment—to dribble, to play one- or two-touch football, and to set up a teammate who hasn’t scored yet. I play for happiness,” he added.
“A bad match from Lamine is equivalent to 400 bad matches from anyone else. If I perform at a nine out of ten, people will say it was a seven out of ten.”
Addressing the Ballon d’Or, Yamal stated: “To be honest, this isn’t the only year I’ve performed at a level worthy of winning it; it’s been longer than that. Everyone knows I am a player who makes the difference.”
“People think, ‘Lamine is only 19, he’ll win it later, so let’s give it to someone else.’ I just have to keep winning and winning, and a time will come when there is no debate left. There will always be people who love me and others who find me annoying, and that’s normal,” he concluded.
