The Republic of Ireland national team has confirmed its participation against Israel in the UEFA Nations League following extensive deliberations and an internal squad vote, where a significant majority approved playing the fixtures despite moral and political objections regarding the war in Gaza.
However, goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu diverged from the majority decision, informing the coaching staff that he does not wish to take part in the two matches against Israel, scheduled to take place in Hungary and Serbia, making him the sole player to withdraw from the Irish squad on these grounds.
David Courell, Chief Executive Officer of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), confirmed that the stance was reached after hours of discussion among the squad, emphasizing that the association fully respects Bazunu’s personal position and will not impose disciplinary measures against him.
Ireland Head Coach Highlights “Unprecedented Pressure”
Head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson acknowledged the gravity of the decision, stating: “Nobody feels comfortable playing this game,” adding that the pressure surrounding the players and technical staff reached unprecedented levels.
“Participating does not mean accepting or supporting what is happening in Gaza,” Hallgrímsson continued, highlighting that the players were forced to weigh their personal convictions against their professional commitments to the national team and the association.
Ireland players have decided to boycott all matchday media obligations, decline exchanging pre-match handshakes or commemorative pennants with Israeli players, wear black armbands, and donate match fees along with a portion of gate receipts from their fixture against Austria toward humanitarian relief initiatives.
The FAI had previously requested UEFA to suspend Israel’s membership; however, European football’s governing body rejected the petition. Additionally, the FAI General Assembly voted 68% in favor of fulfilling the fixtures in July after officials warned that forfeiting would result in automatic defeats, financial fines, and potential disqualification from the competition.
Bazunu’s withdrawal presents a tactical dilemma for the coaching staff due to regulations mandating three goalkeepers in the official matchday squad, prompting Ireland to consider calling up Mark Travers or Josh Keeley, or registering an outfield player as a backup goalkeeper alongside Caoimhín Kelleher and Max O’Leary.
