River Plate has begun exploring the possibility of signing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, a move that could potentially fulfill a long-held ambition for the Al Hilal star.
The Argentine club is evaluating options ahead of a potential departure for young goalkeeper Santiago Beltrán, whom management faces difficulty retaining amid growing transfer interest.
According to Argentine journalist Hernán Castillo, Bounou is not merely a name on a shortlist, but represents the “first, second, and third” choice for River executives to reinforce their goalkeeping position.
The source added that River’s hierarchy has already initiated preliminary contacts with the Moroccan goalkeeper’s representatives to gauge his stance and willingness to discuss a move to Buenos Aires.
River’s interest comes as no surprise given Bounou’s repeated declarations of affection for the club. Speaking previously about the prospect of wearing the jersey, Bounou noted: “It does not depend solely on me, but if the opportunity arises one day, it would be a great thing.”
The Moroccan shot-stopper reiterated his desire to play in Argentina last February, outlining his remaining career objectives: “Winning a title with the national team, continuing to give my best for Al Hilal, and playing in Argentine football.”
However, a potential transfer remains far from finalized. The 35-year-old extended his contract with Al Hilal in October 2025 for two additional seasons, keeping him tied to the Saudi club through the summer of 2028.
Bounou has maintained his strong form at the start of the current campaign, appearing in 7 official matches for Al Hilal, recording 4 clean sheets and conceding just 4 goals across 630 minutes of action.
The transfer fee, player wages, and Al Hilal’s firm stance represent the main hurdles for River Plate, particularly as the Saudi club faces no contractual pressure to let their primary goalkeeper leave on a reduced fee.
While Bounou’s affinity for River could streamline personal terms, it alone will not suffice; any potential move will only progress into formal negotiations if Beltrán departs and Al Hilal agrees to discuss a suitable offer.
