Augsburg needed just eight seconds to find the back of the net against Bayern Munich before forcing the defending champions to a thrilling 2-2 draw at the WWK Arena in matchday five of the Bundesliga.
Bayern’s tally reached 11 points, keeping them in second place and trailing leaders Borussia Dortmund by two points—making Dortmund the primary beneficiaries of the round despite dropping points themselves in a draw with Werder Bremen.
The historic goal arrived courtesy of a double blunder by Luis Díaz and Manuel Neuer: the Colombian winger misplayed a backpass to his goalkeeper, before Neuer’s rushed clearance rebounded directly off Robin Vielhauer, who tapped the ball comfortably into the unguarded net.
Vielhauer’s strike became the fastest goal in Bundesliga’s 60-plus-year history, eclipsing the previous 9-second record jointly held by Karim Bellarabi against Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and Kevin Volland against Bayern in 2015.
Bayern recovered their composure in the second half when Ismael Saibari brought the sides level in the 55th minute following a setup from Harry Kane. However, Rodrigo Ribeiro restored the hosts’ lead roughly ten minutes later.
Nathaniel Brown rescued Vincent Kompany’s side from defeat by grabbing the equalizer in the 80th minute, capitalizing on a second assist from Harry Kane, though late Bavarian pressure failed to yield a winning goal.
The draw marked Bayern’s second league stalemate of the campaign, following a goalless draw with Schalke, while preserving their undefeated record. Meanwhile, Augsburg raised their total to 8 points, climbing temporarily to fifth place.
Bayern travel to face Viking in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, before hosting RB Leipzig on Saturday in the Bundesliga, in a crucial week that leaves no room for further slips if the team aims to reclaim top spot from Dortmund.
