Tunisia is the latest setback… Arab disappointments at the beginning of AFCON

The Tunisia national team suffered a surprise defeat from the Namibia national team 1-0, in the match that brought them together for the first round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

This is the first victory achieved by the Namibia national team in the history of its participation in the Nations Cup, and thus the knot of the first match for the Carthage Eagles continues as well.

The Tunisian national team did not succeed in winning its first group match in Alcan since the 2013 edition in South Africa, and it also opened the last edition with a defeat, but it was at the hands of Mali.

The only goal of the match came from Dion Hutto in the 88th minute, leaving coach Jalal Al Qadiri’s squad in a difficult position considering the two upcoming matches awaited.

Tunisia will face the Mali national team next Saturday, then it will face a match with South Africa, and it is required to win both matches in order to pass to the round of 16.

Tunisia’s stumble is the latest setback for Arab teams in the African Cup of Nations, which began with Egypt’s hard-fought 2-2 draw with Mozambique.

Egypt’s failure to achieve victory was followed by another disappointing draw for the Algerian national team with the Angola national team 1-1, in a match in which the advantage was clearly given to coach Djamel Belmadi’s squad.

The Arab failure continued in the first round of the African Cup groups, after the Mauritania team lost in the last moments to Burkina Faso with a penalty kick scored by Bertrand Traore.

It remains to be noted that the Moroccan national team is the remaining Arab team that has not yet played its match in the groups, as it will face its counterpart, the Tanzania national team, on Wednesday evening.
