The first surprise in the African Cup of Nations.. “Scandal” in Côte d’Ivoire!

The Côte d’Ivoire national team is on the verge of bidding farewell to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after a massive and historic loss to Equatorial Guinea 4-0 in the last group stage matches.

The host team conceded a goal in the first half to Emilio Nso, then Pablo Janet scored the second goal in the 73rd minute.

Franck Kessie’s teammates then collapsed, as Nso scored the third goal in the 75th minute and Yannick Puela the fourth in the 88th minute.

This is the first time in the history of the Nations Cup competition that the team hosting the tournament was defeated by four clean goals.

At the same time, Nigeria defeated Guinea-Bissau with an unanswered goal, ensuring that the Eagles qualified for the round of 16.

Equatorial Guinea, after its great victory, topped the group standings with 7 points, the same as Nigeria, but the goal advantage gives the former top spot in the group.

As for Côte d’Ivoire, it practically bid farewell to the competition, occupying third place with 3 points and a very negative goal difference (-3).

Côte d’Ivoire is waiting for a miracle to qualify for the round of 16, as it needs two teams in third place in the rest of the groups, lower in points or with a lower goal difference, both of which seem very difficult.

Côte d’Ivoire will become the third host country to exit the African Cup in the group stage, after Tunisia 1994 and Gabon 2017.
