The biggest shocks of AFCON: the exclusion of Algeria by Mauritania

The Algerian national team exited the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage following a 1-0 defeat by Mauritania in the final round of the group stage.

Coach Djamel Belmadi’s squad did not succeed in achieving any victory in the African Nations for the second time in a row, after repeating the same scenario in the Cameroon 2021 edition.

The Mauritanian national team’s only goal came in the 37th minute via Mohamed Yali, which gives Al-Mourabitoun a great opportunity to advance to the group stage from the top three.

This victory is the first victory achieved by Mauritania in the history of its participation in the African Nations, and with it it qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time in its history.

Angola qualified from first place after defeating Burkina Faso 2-0, reaching the seventh point, while the “Horses” qualified from second place with 4 points.

Mauritania is in third place with 3 points and a goal difference of -1, ahead of Ghana (2 points) and Côte d’Ivoire (3 points and a goal difference of -3), ensuring qualification to the final 16.

As for Algeria, it tied with Angola 1-1 and Burkina Faso 2-2 and lost to Mauritania, placing it at the bottom of the group with only two points in one of the biggest surprises of the competition.
