Real Madrid captain: We do not want to be Atletico Madrid

Nacho Fernandez, captain of Real Madrid, expressed his disappointment at the defeat his team suffered against Atletico Madrid in the King’s Cup, but he came back and stressed that it was an undeserved defeat, and that the Royal Club can compensate in the other tournaments in which it is still competing.

Atletico Madrid advanced twice and Real Madrid succeeded in returning during regular time, but during extra time Antoine Griezmann scored a wonderful goal, followed by a match-killing goal from Riquelme, so that the “Rojiblancos” qualified for the quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory.

Nacho spoke after the match about what happened, saying, “It is a painful defeat. Of course, we did not want to say goodbye to the King’s Cup. We are Real Madrid and we want to compete for all possible championships.”

He also added, “I do not want to change my current position with Atletico Madrid. They were competing with us for La Liga, and now the difference has become huge for us.”

He continued, “In fact, we did not deserve to lose today. We presented a very complete match, but we have to learn from some of the mistakes that occurred.”

He concluded, “Exiting the cup does not shame us. Yes, we are hurt by the loss after everything we gave physically despite the fatigue from the Super Cup, but now we are looking forward to what comes next.”

It is noteworthy that Real Madrid occupies second place in the Spanish League, one point behind leaders Girona, with a game less than Carlo Ancelotti.

The Merengues will also face Leipzig next February in the round of 16 matches of the Champions League.
