Iraq defeats Japan with a historic victory and qualifies for the round of 16 of the Asian Cup

The Iraqi national team secured qualification to the round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Cup following its victory over the Japanese national team 2-1 in the second round of the group stage.

The Iraqi national team stopped Japan’s series of 11 consecutive victories since the last defeat the “Samurai” suffered against Colombia in a friendly match last March.

Ayman Hussein was the first hero of the match after he scored the opening goal in the fourth minute, then scored the second goal in the last minute of the first half, before leaving injured after that.

Ayman Hussein became the current Asian Cup top scorer, equal to Akram Afif, the Qatar national team star, with 3 goals for each of them.

The “Lions of Mesopotamia” reached point No. 6, and with it their presence in the round of 16 became certain, and in the event of a win over Vietnam in the last round or a draw, they would qualify from the first place gate.

This victory is historic by all standards for Iraq, as it is the first defeat suffered by Japan in the group stage of the Asian Cup since the 1988 edition.

It remains to be noted that this victory is the first victory in the history of Iraq against the Japanese national team, after they previously met in 11 official and friendly matches, which “Computer” won 9 times, and the best Iraq achieved was a draw twice.
