How did Barcelona’s Xavi enter the history of La Liga in the match against Real Betis?

The match between Barcelona and Real Betis in the Spanish League witnessed a unique event whose first hero was coach Xavi Hernandez.

The young duo of Lamine Yamal and Bao Cubarsi participated mainly, and the former assisted a goal, while the latter left the field in the 81st minute.

Barcelona became the first team in La Liga since 1986 to have two 16-year-old players participate at the same time.

The only time something similar happened was in the 1984-85 season, when the young players participated due to a strike by the senior players.

At the same time, Xavi Hernandez became the first coach in the 21st century to field mainly under-17 players in a La Liga match.

The Catalan coach may have been a bit lucky, as Cubarsi will turn 17 on Monday, while Yamal has 16 years and 192 days.

Xavi had justified relying on the young duo by saying, “We have to rely on these young men because of the club’s economic situation. We cannot include new players, but all our young players are prepared and ready.”

Barcelona won 4-2, but it still occupies third place in the La Liga standings, 8 points behind leaders Girona, and 7 behind runner-up Real Madrid.
