Iraq achieved a historic victory, by all standards, over Vietnam, with a score of 3-2, at the conclusion of the group stage matches of the 2023 Asian Cup.
The match was exciting in its events, after Iraq advanced 2-1, then Vietnam tied in the 90th minute, before Ayman Hussein scored the third goal in the 11th minute of stoppage time, giving the Mesopotamian Lions victory.
This victory has special value, as for the first time in Iraq’s history, it succeeded in achieving the full mark in the Asian Cup, after beating Indonesia 3-1, Japan 2-1, and finally Vietnam 3-2.
On the other hand, this is the second time that Iraq has topped its group, and the first time was in the historic 2007 edition, when Younis Mahmoud’s teammates achieved the historic title at that time.
Perhaps repeating the achievement may be a good omen for Iraq that it may achieve the second title in its history, especially with the distinguished generation led by the Spanish coach Casas.
In the round of 16, the Iraqi team will face the third-placed team from Group Five or Six, which has not yet been determined.
It remains to be noted that Japan beat Indonesia 3-1, thus ensuring qualification from second place, with the Samurai facing the leaders of Group Five, South Korea, or Jordan.
