Côte d’Ivoire eliminates defending champion Senegal in AFCON

The shocks of the African nations continue… Côte d’Ivoire eliminates defending champion Senegal

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations continued to provide surprises and shocks to football fans, this time after the defending champion Senegal bid farewell to Côte d’Ivoire on penalties in the round of 16.

The qualification of the hosts, Côte d’Ivoire, to the final 16 was strange and exciting. The Elephants needed a miracle to qualify from the top three, and it happened thanks to Morocco in particular.

Côte d’Ivoire met with Senegal, where the defending champion took the lead in the first half, before Franck Kessie succeeded in the 88th minute from a penalty kick.

After regular and extra time ended in a goalless draw, the two teams went to penalty kicks, during which Lamine Kamara missed a kick, while the hosts scored all the kicks to win 5-4 and qualify for the quarter-finals.

The Côte d’Ivoire national team is scheduled to meet the winner of the Mali-Burkina Faso match in the quarter-finals.

The elimination of Senegal comes a day after the elimination of the runner-up of the last edition and the most crowned champion in history, the Egyptian national team, after also losing on penalties to Congo in a resounding surprise.

Senegal joins major teams that bid farewell to CAN early, such as Ghana, Tunisia and Algeria from the group stage, and Cameroon and Egypt from the round of 16.
