Frenkie de Jong refused to hold Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez responsible for the team’s defeat against Villarreal, and said that the players are the reason for everything that happens.
The Catalan club suffered a heavy defeat from Villarreal 5-3 at the Luis Companis Olympic Stadium, raising the difference in La Liga with leaders Real Madrid to 10 points.
As is usual in Barcelona, the defeat now threatens Xavi’s future, which is what made most of the players go out to the media and confirm their full support for him.
De Jong spoke after the match about what happened, saying, “It is our fault, we are the players. If the plan does not work well on the field, then this is our fault, not the coach’s alone.”
He also added, “There is complete confidence in Xavi and his crew. They are doing a good job. What is happening is our fault, the players.”
As for Joao Cancelo, he also repeated this talk, saying, “We should not blame the coach, it is our responsibility.”
For his part, Ronald Araujo renewed, for the second time in less than a week, his and the players’ absolute support for Xavi.
The Uruguayan said, “Of course we are with Xavi, since he came here and helped us a lot. We won La Liga last season with him.”
He concluded, “When Xavi came here, the team was in a miserable state, a team without DNA or philosophy. He gave us character and desire back. We are all with him and support him.”
