Abu Jabal ousts the Egyptian national team from the African Cup of Nations

The Egyptian national team bid farewell to the African Cup of Nations after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties.

The regular and extra time between the two teams ended in a positive draw with one goal for each.

Coach Desabre’s squad opened the scoring in the 37th minute through Meshack Elia, before Mustafa Mohamed equalized from a penalty kick in the 45th minute.

Substitute Mohamed Hamdy received a red card in extra time, after which the Pharaohs completed the match with ten players.

After the extra time ended in a tie as well, the two teams went to penalty kicks, and the Egyptians were hoping that Mohamed Abu Jabal would continue his brilliance in it, as was the case in the 2021 edition in Cameroon.

But the 34-year-old failed to save any kicks, and the only kick the Congolese team missed was an off-target shot.

In the eighth kick for Egypt, Abu Jabal decided to shoot the ball himself, but he put it on the crossbar, after which the Congolese goalkeeper scored the victory kick for his country.

Thus, the Congolese national team will meet the Guinea national team in the round of 16, while Egypt will return to the Land of the Nile carrying great disappointment and harsh criticism of coach Rui Vitoria.
