The identity of all those qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Spanish King’s Cup was decided after the dramatic victory achieved by Atletico Madrid over its neighbor Real Madrid with a score of 4-2 at the end of the round of 16 matches.
The most prominent qualifier to the quarter-finals was Barcelona, the club that won the most cup titles, which it had previously achieved on 31 previous occasions, most recently in the 2021-2022 edition.
So far, Barcelona has not faced a real opponent in the cup. In the round of 32, it faced Barbastro and beat it 3-2. Then it met third-tier team Unionista Salamanca in the round of 16 and beat it 3-1.
But what is certain is that in the quarter-finals, a very difficult task awaits Barcelona, given the potential opponents.
Next to Diego Simeone’s squad will be Girona, which inflicted a heavy defeat on the Catalans in La Liga in their stronghold, 4-2, and leads the Spanish League standings by 8 points from the Blaugrana.
Another stubborn opponent is Sevilla, even if the Andalusian club is suffering this season from a significant decline in results, as well as one of the strongest teams locally this season, Athletic Bilbao, which achieved the same score as Barca in the league, 41 points.
Added to the previous difficult names is one of the clubs that have always been a problem for Barcelona, Real Sociedad, along with Celta Vigo, which is led by experienced coach Rafael Benitez.
Perhaps the only option that seems relatively within the reach of Xavi Hernandez’s squad is Real Mallorca, even if the two teams’ confrontation in the league ended in a 2-2 draw.
The draw for the quarter-finals is scheduled to be held on Friday evening, January 19, with the matches for this round being played on the 24th of the same month.
